NONGPOH: Several Karbi associations in the state and the Khasi Students’ Union have condemned the death of Wandalin Kongor and raised concerns over the safety of northeasterners living in the mainland.
Karbi bodies like the All Meghalaya Karbi Association, All Meghalaya Karbi Women Association, Karbi Students Association and All Meghalaya Karbi Youth Association, said there has been a rise in attacks on people from the North East living in Delhi. They sought fast inquiry into the Kongor’s murder and arrests.
The Khasi Students Union, North Khasi Hills District Unit, through its president Ferdynald K Kharkamni, also voiced its concerns.
“We were shocked to learn about the incident where a local lady was found dead in her apartment in the National Capital. She was suspected to be murdered,” Kharkamni said.
The union demanded that the state government intervene in the matter to ensure proper investigation. It added that the state government must come out with some initiative to protect local youths studying and working in Delhi so that such incident can be avoided in the future, Kharkamni said. Umsning legislator Jason Mawlong flew to New Delhi on Thursday. He accompanied the woman’s relatives. He too felt such attacks were a cause for concern and called for thorough inquiry.
