SHILLONG: With only a single judge available in the High Court of Meghalaya, the cases to be taken up by the division bench are pending.
On March 3, Justice SR Sen was appointed as the acting chief justice following the retirement of Chief Justice Tarun Agarwala who held the post for less than a month.
Sources said on Thursday that if any client wants to take up the cases in the division bench, he or she has to approach the Supreme Court.
The Apex Court will then refer the matter to the Gauhati High Court depending on the necessity of clearing the cases.
However, sources added that not every client can afford to knock at the door of the Supreme Court.
As on February 28, there are 698 cases pending to be disposed of by the High Court of Meghalaya.
Sources added that though the collegium to appoint judges met recently, it did not consider Meghalaya.
There was a recent observation by the Supreme Court that if the High Court remains without permanent chief justice, it may affect the speedy delivery of justice.
