GUWAHATI: An outing on Good Friday turned sour for a Special Force-10 constable who was detained by police in connection with a “firing” in the Morogdola area of Sonapur near here on Friday afternoon.
Sonapur officer in-charge Utpal Roy told The Shillong Times on Saturday that locals upon hearing a gunshot had caught Sanjeev R. Marak, the SF-10 constable, along with three others who had accompanied him and brought them to the police station after they suspected he had fired at someone around 1pm.
“However, when the constable, who is from Williamnagar, was interrogated at the police station he revealed that he had fired on a stray dog for consuming its meat. He was released on bail after an officer of SF-10 came to the police station in the evening,” Roy said.
SF-10 is a special battalion of the Meghalaya police raised to engage in anti-insurgency operations in the state.
“A 9mm pistol and 10 rounds of live bullets were recovered from their possession and an auto rickshaw (ML-10B-0813), which the four had taken to the area from Byrnihat, was also seized,” the police officer said.
When contacted, JFK Marak, commandant, (SF-10) and additional inspector general of police (law and order), Meghalaya, Shillong, said departmental action would be taken against the constable as it was a case of “indiscipline”.
“He is on leave and was not authorised to carry the weapon or fire like that. Assam police had registered a case against him and an assistant commandant from our side had gone there to bring him after taking bail. So departmental action will be initiated against him,” Marak told this correspondent.
