NCP chief wants ex-rebels’ rehabilitation

SHILLONG: Saleng Sangma, the state president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) state president, said on Tuesday proper guidance and counselling are necessary for surrendered militants, who are often left in the lurch, to ensure that they stay away from illegal activities.
When asked about militancy-hit Garo Hills, Sangma told reporters that NGOs and agencies should not leave the surrendered militants half-way.
“The NGOs and religious leaders, who facilitated them to the mainstream, should not leave them half way. They should guide them till the end, till they are fully positive (members) of the society,” he said. “So whom are you going to blame? You cannot blame the government but it is the people who have administered them to come overground. They should know how to facilitate them not only through packages but with their mind,” he added.
Sangma also stressed the need for counselling and guidance on life and livelihood should be given to the surrendered militants.
