GUWAHATI: Newly-elected chief executive member of Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), Moonlight Pariat has said he would soon move the DoNER ministry over release of the second instalment for resumption of work on the partly-constructed Iawmusiang super market in Jowai.
The DoNER-sponsored project worth nearly Rs 19crore has been left in a part-done state owing to non-release of the second instalment of funds by the ministry.
“The project is definitely top priority for the council and it’s been nine years since the first instalment(Rs 6.33crore) was released. I will soon seek an appointment with DoNER minister, Jitendra Singh in New Delhi to push for release of the second instalment so that work on the project can resume at the earliest,” Pariat told The Shillong Times on Tuesday.
Pariat was elected unopposed as the CEM of the council last Thursday. He replaced Awhoi Andrew Shullai following a no-trust motion against the latter. Shullai was made chief of the council only last year by the Congress.
As of today, the partly-constructed mass of greyish concrete is surrounded by a dense “jungle”, bearing testimony to the years of apathy it has had to endure.
Once completed, the multi-storied market complex at the heart of Jowai town would not only house a number of shops and “displaced” vendors but would be a potential revenue-churner.
When this correspondent had visited the makeshift market a few months back, a number of anxious women vendors said they were looking ahead to early completion of the project.
Apart from expediting the Iawmusiang market project, Pariat had said he would try his best to mitigate the financial crisis of the council.
