SHILLONG: Elaborate security arrangements have been made in the city in view of the National Awakening Day observance by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Wednesday.
The Police Department, once bitten twice shy, is extra cautious this time after a KSU rally in the city on the occasion of its 40th anniversary last month turned violent. It has deployed security personnel all over the city anticipating another rally.
However, KSU will not take out a rally on Wednesday unlike previous years.
A police order said the arrangement “is to prevent miscreants from taking advantage of the situation”. Investigation into last month’s violence is still on.
When contacted, officials in the East Khasi Hills district administration said they have not received any application from KSU for issuing permission to hold rally or meeting in the city.
When KSU leaders were contacted, they said the union will hold a meeting on Wednesday.
Even East Khasi Hills SP Davis Marak said KSU has not applied for permission to hold a rally but police came to know that the union will have a meeting with some of its members.
Meanwhile, the city police are not taking any chances and it has made detailed security arrangements in view of the observation of the day.
“We are just taking precautions and we have alerted our men,” Marak said.
The district police chief, in an order, said there is a possibility that some anti-social elements may take advantage of the fluid situation leading to a breakdown of law and order.
