TURA: Fresh from their victory over Congress in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council for the positions of chief executive member and council chairman respectively, the National People’s Party showed it’s appreciation by rewarding those MDCs who parted ways with the grand old party to join their alliance.
Garo National Council MDC, Augustine R Marak, who remained loyal to the NPP alliance while his two other colleagues joined Congress was appointed to the post of Chairman of the High Powered Committee (HPC) and will draw all perks and facilities equivalent to the position of CEM.
Augustine had been the deputy CEM in the previous NPP-led Executive Committee headed by Denang T. Sangma before losing power to Boston Marak and Congress.
In a house of 29 elected members Boston was left with just eight supporting MDCs while the NPP’s Garo Hills Progressive Alliance numbers swelled to 20 MDCs forcing the CEM to vacate his post.
This was followed by the resignation of the chairperson of the house and Congress MDC Sadhiarani Sangma who paved the way for the election of Denang T Sangma as the new council chairman.
Three other MDCs supporting the new NPP coalition headed by Dipul R Marak as CEM have also been made chairmen of various bodies under the district council.
Congress MDC from Kharkutta who defected to the NPP alliance, Smith M Momin, has been appointed as the chairman of the Cotton Growers Association.
BJP MDC Sofiur Rahman has been made chairman of the Forest Advisory Committee. Another defecting MDC from the Congress alliance Levastone T Sangma has been been appointed as chairman of the Bakijai Advisory Committee.
Meanwhile, the list of new executive members of the Dipul-Marak led Executive Committee has been forwarded to governor Ganga Prasad for approval.
The list includes senior MDCs Sukharam K Sangma and Dolly K Sangma.
