Pune youth body writes to Hek for ambulance
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Youth Association Pune has written to Health Minister AL Hek on providing an ambulance to the Meghalaya House in Navi Mumbai for the convenience of those who visit the metro city for treatment.
In the letter, the president of the association, Amsrang D Momin, said Mumbai is a big city and newcomers often find it difficult to move around. Hiring taxis also becomes expensive. Momin also wrote that “insufficiency of rooms is a big concern”. “It is inconvenient for a sick person to be staying in general dormitory and may cause equal inconvenience for the next person to be staying with the sick… it will be helpful if additional rooms are constructed… for people with medical conditions,” the letter stated.
KSU lauds city cops’ traffic awareness lessons
SHILLONG: The KSU Mawlai circle lauded the effort of the Shillong Traffic Police on the awareness programme conducted by the department at Mawlai Nongkwar petrol pump.
In a statement issued to the press, KSU lauded the efforts to sensitise civilians, especially schoolchildren, on zebra crossings. The union has demanded zebra crossings from PWD (Roads) to be implemented at Iewrynghep and Nongkwar Petrol Pump, Mawlai Umthlong, Mawiongrim and in places where there are many schools.
Govt payment delay hits cancer screening tests
SHILLONG: The Roko Cancer Charitable Trust stated that the screening and detection camps have been temporarily suspended due to delay in payments by the government as some internal procedure needed to be completed by the Health Department. In a statement issued here, the Trust stated that the operations of the Trust have been proceeding perfectly as per approved schedule and the reputed organisation has conducted the screening and detection camps from October to December 2017. “The intimation regarding temporary suspension of camps was given in writing to the officials concerned and they are trying to release our payments to enable us to resume the camps in the interest of health care needs of the population,” the statement said. The trust stated that it is in touch with the government to resume the cancer screening and detection camps as soon as possible depending on the early release of the payments. The trust also said that it is better to give employment to local personnel who can imbibe the concerns of the population better than an outsider.
Women’s self defense training kicks off
NONGSTOIN: The office of the District Sport Officer, West Khasi Hills along with the District Social Welfare Officer and District Sports Promotion Society, West Khasi Hills launched the training camp on Self Defense for Women at the Indoor Stadium in Nongstoin on Wednesday. The training camp will conclude on April 27. Mary Ann Kharbhih, District Social Welfare Officer, P.B.War Nongbri, DSO, D.Sunn, Nongstoin boxing coach were present during the inauguration. Nongbri said that more than fifty trainees will be given training under Linza F Syiem and her assistants – Rodrick Syiem and Edelbirth Lyndem , both black belts in Karate.

SHILLONG: The Mass Media department of St. Anthony’s College will organise a photography event which will include workshops photo exhibition and an online contest for the chance to win cash prizes. SHILLONG: An alleged gold smuggler was arrested from a hotel here on Wednesday. The accused identified as Ranesh Sangma was arrested from Polo and one gold biscuit was recovered from his possession
Man dies after falling from bus
SHILLONG: A man succumbed to his injuries after he fell down from a running bus on Tuesday around 5:30 pm.
The man identified as Albin Roy Kharbihkhiew was reportedly under the influence of liquor and attempted to jump off a running bus (ML-05H-6961) driven by Jingdonbok Kharsati at Laimaw village in East Khasi Hills. Kharbihkhiew fell off the bus, sustained injuries and was admitted at Nazareth Hospital, where the attending MO declared him brought dead.
Truck runs over minor
NONGSTOIN: One truck (ML 05H 6496) ran over one minor at Riangkhain village on NH 44E on Wednesday around 3:30pm. The minor succumbed to his injuries before reaching Riangdo CHC. According to sources, the truck was driven by Dominic Gare (28) of Nongdaju village in West Khasi Hills. Riangdo police rushed to the scene after learning about the incident. The minor identified as Carlos Nongbak (12) of Riangkhain village was taken to Riangdo CHC by his relatives. Police have seized the truck along with the driver who was arrested and taken to the police station for interrogation.
FSP inaugurates office
SHILLONG: The Family Strengthening Programme or FSP, of SOS Children’s Village Shillong, in collaboration with the Dorbar Shnong of Mynsain, inaugurated its newly constructed FSP Community Office at Mynsain on Saturday.
Umroi MLA George B. Lyngdoh attended the inaugural programme as the chief guest. The FSP Community Office will serve as a multi-utility centre for SHG members and Children Parliament meetings and will be accessible to the community as well. The Family Strengthening Programme (FSP) is centering on the SOS Children’s Village, Shillong, and is a preventive community intervention programme designed to prevent children from losing parental care. It operates in rural areas within a 40 km radius of SOS CV. The programme aims to enable families to move out of the vicious cycle of poverty.
