SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced recently that the government is taking steps to ease the traffic in Shillong.
Speaking to reporters, Sangma said that he will be heading a group of ministers to find short, medium and long terms solutions to decongest the city’s traffic woes.
Stating that the government recently held a meeting with line departments on the matter, Sangma informed that a small task committee has also been setup to identify 18 locations in the city where the government could find some ways to carry out construction work in order to decongest the area.
“It is not easy for us as there are many factors involved in it and we are trying to bring a holistic approach on the matter,” Sangma said.
Sangma pointed out that he has already asked the concerned departments to come out with the most creative idea to solve the problem of traffic snarl. “It does not matter if such idea works or not”, he said.
When asked about the possibility of getting land from the Army located in the city to create the necessary infrastructure, Sangma said that it requires a bit of negotiation and lobbying with the Ministry of Defence which is not easy as in the past, such efforts did not bring positive results.
“However, if it is feasible, we will look into the matter and we have asked the PWD to submit a report,” the chief minister added.
