TURA: Meghalaya Chief Justice (Acting) Sudip Ranjan Sen on Saturday was disappointed when he had to inaugurate a building under construction here that will be the permanent address of the District and Sessions Court.
“When something has to be done then it should be properly done, otherwise it shouldn’t be done at all,” Sen said while expressing his displeasure at the shoddy work progress.
The PWD-Building is responsible for the construction as well as another permanent building for Williamnagar District and Sessions Court. The latter has been completed and business will start in the new complex, adjacent to the DC office compound, from Monday.
Sen visited both Tura in Wst Garo Hills and Williamnagar in East Garo Hills to inaugurate the buildings on Saturday.
The rooms of the new court in Tura are yet to be furnished, require a major paint job on the outside and the approach road is yet to be completed.
The Chief Justice (Acting) — who was accompanied by Law Secretary W Khyllep, Registrar General of the High Court of Meghalaya B Mawrie, PWD chief engineer F Marbaniang, district officials and members of the bar association — encouraged police, the prosecution and the court to work together so as to provide substantial justice to the people.
He said that the Indian justice system has plenty of sufficient rules and laws and what is required is its proper application.
Sen expressed concern that many a times criminals are able to get away taking advantage of the system and that the time had come to apply the law with an iron hand.
He made a reference to the recent incident at Medanta super-speciality hospital in Delhi where the license for its pharmacy was suspended for a week for overcharging patients in medical bills.
“Instead of suspending the license it should have been cancelled,” remarked Justice Sen. He added that proper application of mind is required while giving a verdict.
Earlier, the Chief Judicial Magistrate of West Garo Hills, Mr D Marbaniang gave the welcome address at Tura while the vote of thanks was proposed by the district sessions judge.
