Two men assaulted, shot at for resisting extortion
NONGSTOIN: Two persons were assaulted before being shot at by four miscreants in West Khasi Hills on Sunday.The victims, identified as Alexius Mawbon (36) and Garbin Nongbak (50), were beaten up with SBBL guns. A complaint lodged at Shallang police station stated that the incident happened around 5 pm when Mawbah and Nongbak were returning from Hasib cattle shed. On reaching Dbang Khadkhoh, the miscreants attacked them and injured Nongbak. They demanded Rs 10 lakh from them and when the victims protested, one of them opened fire at Mawbon. Police said the bullet missed him. The accused were identified as Aibor Dkhar, Eblin D Mark, Shandra Dopho and Huin Dkhar, all from Mawkhnai village. The police informed that the four are still at large and a manhunt has been launched.
Delhi green crusader to help save WKH rivers
NONGSTOIN: The District Administration of West Khasi Hills has conducted a workshop on the rejuvenation of rivers Nonbah and Nondein under the Chief Minister’s Youth for Green Campaign on Tuesday. Manoj Kumar Misra, a former Indian Forest Service officer turned environmentalist, who is leading New Delhi in its battle to save the Yamuna, will help rejuvenate these two rivers. The two rivers have been damaged due to population explosion and unregulated development. Headmen of 16 localities, departmental officers, prominent citizens, women association, NGOs and youth leaders took part in the workshop. They have re-affirmed their commitment to save the rivers. “This is not just a symbolic cleaning drive, but a scientific planning to make the rivers healthy (not clean, but healthy) again which will take minimum 5 years,” Misra said.
Training in psychosocial care in disasters concludes
SHILLONG: The Additional Deputy Commissioner and CEO, DDMA, East Khasi Hills District has informed that a three-day Training of Trainers (TOT) programme on Psychosocial Care in Disasters organised by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), held at St. Anthony’s College concluded recently.
Headmen sensitised on legal literacy
SHILLONG: The Department of Justice, Ministry of Law & Justice in collaboration with Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority under Access to Justice (NE&JK) Project, conducted a one-day training and sensitisation of Headmen at the Mylliem C&RD Block Development Office on Tuesday. The purpose of the training was to sensitise the headmen on legal literacy. The topics covered under the training were FIR, RTI, Women’s Rights, Child Rights, Fundamental Rights, Marriage Laws and Access to Justice through Legal Aid Service.
Copyright violation will lead to serious jail term
SHILLONG: The Assistant Area Manager, Phonographic Performance Limited, Shillong has informed that infringement of copyright, pertaining to copyrighted music, is viewed as a serious offence. The offence may lead to non-bailable under the provisions of the Copyright Act 1957, attracting a fine of not less than Rs. 50,000 which may extend to Rs. 2 lakh and imprisonment upto 6 months which may extend to 3 years. The manager, therefore, urged all concerned using copyrighted music in public places, commercial establishments and for various events, to operate within the confines of the law and obtain the mandatory licence for such usage. He also informed that Phonographic Performance Limited is an autonomous body constituted under and mandated by provisions of the Copyright Act 1957. It is a duly registered body and designated by the Government of India as an authorised body to issue licences for the usage of copyrighted music and collect music for the same. Bangladeshi national held
SHILLONG: A Bangladeshi national was arrested in Shillong recently for entering into the country illegally, a delayed report said. Police said that on April 7 around 3.20 pm, Almansur Pradhan was arrested from Lumdiengjri for infiltration.
Blood donation camp organised
SHILLONG: National Health Mission Employees Association of Meghalaya had recently held its first Blood donation camp to mark World Health Day on April 7. The camp was organised in collaboration with the Regional Blood Bank, Pasteur Institute Shillong. More than 20 donors donated blood on this day.
Samaritans save man’s life
SHILLONG: An act of kindness was witnessed at Wahingdoh on Sunday, when the locals helped a man by calling 108 emergency services. Atul Arora of Lailad, Nongmensong thanked the Samaritans for helping him get treatment on time. Arora, had collapsed due to severe illness around 2 pm and the residents of Wahingdoh provided assistance and called the ambulance.
