Union minister sounded on need to operationalise coal mining in Meghalaya

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma called on Union Coal Minister Piyush Goyal in New Delhi on Sunday along with State PWD Minister Prestone Tynsong, Tourism Minister Metbah Lyngdoh and Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh.

Officials from the Ministry of Coal were also present in the meeting.

Sangma along with his cabinet colleagues discussed ways forward to operationalisation of coal mining in Meghalaya with thrust on balance between environment and economic activity related to mining. 

The issue of NGT ban on coal mining in Meghalaya was discussed at length.  

“Coal mining is important for the state and the region. It is important that a balance is struck considering the fragile environment. We discussed  ways to initiate coal mining in the State”, Sangma said.

The Union Minister has given a positive response to the suggestions and ideas put forward by the Chief Minister and his cabinet colleagues.

“The Union Minister has assured finding an early solution to the problem”, the Chief Minister added.
