SHILLONG: As the country is rocked with the twin rapes cases in Kathua and Unnao , the Rajya Sabha MP from Shillong, Wansuk Syiem asserted that a rapist is a rapist and there is no need to define them as a Hindu, Muslim or Christian rapist.
Speaking to The Shillong Times here during a candle light vigil organised by the Congress at Khyndailad on Saturday, the Rajya Sabha member said that rapes are taking place everywhere in the country including Meghalaya which is very sad.
Stating that some people are even supporting the rapists in the country merely because of religious factors, she added that rapists must be hanged .
While condemning the increasing cases of rapes, she expressed surprise that people in some parts of the country have even gone to the extent of supporting rapists merely because of religious factor which is very wrong.
During the candle light vigil, Congress leaders including former Home Minister, HDR Lyngdoh, HM Shangpliang and the women’s wing of the party were also present.
It may be mentioned that an eight-year-old girl of Kathua district in Jammu & Kashmir was raped for days before being eventually killed and the biggest surprise came when two Ministers in Jammu & Kashmir, Lal Singh and Chandar Prakash Ganga participated in protests in favour of the accused in the Kathua gang rape and murder case.
However, the two Ministers were later forced to resign from the cabinet.
On the other hand, a BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar is the main accused in the rape of a 17-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district. The victim alleged that she was raped by the MLA at his residence on June 4, 2017, where she had gone with a relative seeking a job.
