TURA: Garo Hills NGOs-the GSU, FKJGP, AYWO and ADE along with the Hindu Samshan Bhoomi Committee have complained to the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner alleging noise pollution being caused by a Masjid located at Tura Market.

“We have been receiving complaints from people about the unwarranted use of loudspeakers at the Masjid. It is understandable if the loudspeakers are used on special occasions and festivals. But the use of loudspeakers from early morning till night, though at intervals violates the fundamental rights of privacy of the people living close to it and hence is an encroachment of the right to privacy,” the NGOs said.

According to the NGOs, there have been many complaints by citizens that the ‘noise’ affects their mental peace, disturbs the sick and old in bed or otherwise and wakes up the toddlers by startling them at ungodly times. Students also complain of the irritation when they are studying or even playing. Even some schools have complained of the disturbance it provides during class, they claimed.

Citing certain laws and acts, the NGOs stated that banning the use of loudspeakers in the Masjid does not violate any article in the Indian Constitution and urged the deputy commissioner to take necessary action on the matter.
