SHILLONG: Rainy season has finally arrived and it has also brought along with a lot of concerns about landslides, floods, storms and even felling of trees as Shillong city and even other parts of Meghalaya are prone to natural calamities and disasters during the season.

Speaking on the matter, Deputy Commissioner-cum-chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority, PS Dkhar said that there was already a standing standard operating procedures (SoP) of last year which is still force.

“However, we have to remind all the line departments like the Forest, fire and emergency services, MeECL about the last year’s order and we will do it shortly,” he said.

According to Dkhar, the SoP basically contains Dos and Don’ts to be followed during any disaster besides preventive measures

As rainy season has arrived this year, as of now only one landslide has occurred in Malidor in East Jaintia Hills which led to the blockade of the road for few hours.

However, Shillong and its adjonining areas witnessed disastrous instances last year when three people were killed and two others injured after a massive tree fell on road near the Raj Bhawan.

The neighbouring district of Ri Bhoi last year experienced a massive landslide in which five persons, including two minors of two families were buried alive and a house swept away at Tharia in the Umiam industrial area
