SHILLONG: Police are keeping vigil to thwart attempts of criminal groups and new outfits to fill up the vacuum created by GNLA after the militant outfit was neutralised.
DGP SB Singh told reporters that police wanted to ensure that Garo Hills remains peaceful and for this, sustained efforts will be made to ensure normalcy.
The NPP-led MDA government extended the tenure of Singh for three more months.
There were recent incidents of dacoity and looting in some parts of Garo Hills.
According to the police chief, though militancy is on the decline, police will keep vigil.
“Some groups can assume different names. Recently, William Sangma, a hardcore criminal escaped from the judicial custody, but we will ensure that the militancy does not raise its ugly head once again,” Singh said.
To a question, the DGP said police will also keep a watch on surrendered militants so that they do not form any violent groups.
The DGP said with the surrender of many GNLA cadres and seizure of weapons, the law and order situation has improved in Garo Hills.
According to DGP, after the killing of GNLA leader Sohan Shira, many of his weapons were recovered with the assistance of surrendered cadres and people of the area where Sohan had hideouts.
To a question, the DGP said there may be more weapons hidden and this has to be verified.
Asked whether there are any more GNLA cadres, the police chief said, “Only one or two cadres are taking shelter in Bangladesh.”
