SHILLONG: Health and Family Welfare Minister, A L Hek inspected the proposed site for the Shillong Medical College (SMC) at TB Hospital, Jhalupara along with local MLA Mahendro Rapsang and the department’s officials on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters after a brief meeting with the officials, Hek stressed on facilitating better road connectivity as there is only one approach road to the proposed Shillong Medical College.

“We intend to start the Shillong Medical College and to widen the road to the institute. An MoU was signed for the project but no agreement was signed for handing over the land,” he said.

Commenting on the alleged fraud case surrounding the KPC group, he said so far the allegations were not substantiated that KPC was involved in fraud.

“Without any proof we cannot say that we will not work together with KPC. So far, there are no plans to discontinue talks with KPC group,” Hek said.

“The government will think of other plans if there is proof of fraud case. We want to work with clean companies,” he added

As for the New TB Hospital at Umsawli, he said, “If the infrastructure/facilities are not adequate, we will not shift a single patient from here to the new TB Hospital.”

He informed the water supply, electricity, approach road were still not done besides other minor works still pending in the new TB hospital.

“We will complete the Umsawli project within 2018 and shift the patients from here to there,” Hek said.
