Rs 20 lakh ex-gratia to family of Assam cop killed by ultras

GUWAHATI: Assam government has announced Rs 20 lakh ex-gratia and payment of regular monthly salary to the family of state police official, Bhaskar Kalita who was killed by ULFA(I) militants during a fierce gun battle under Bordumsa Police Station area in Tinsukia district of Assam on Friday. Two militants were also killed in the incident.

Bhaskar Kalita, who was the Officer-in-Charge of Bordumsa Police Station, was leading the team of police and paramilitary force personnel during the operation carried out against ULFA(I) militants. He is survived by his wife and two minor children.

Announcing the ex-gratia, Assam chief minister informed that the next of  kin of the slain police officer would be able to draw full salary till his retirement date.

The mortal remains of the killed police officer were consigned to flames at his native place Azara near here with full state honour.

The chief minister condemning the killing of the officer said that such incidents disturbed the peace, harmony and unity in the society and seriously hampered the environment of developmental activities.  He asserted that all extremists and anti-social elements engaged in such heinous crimes would be severely punished.

He also directed the Director General of Police, Kuladhar Saikia, to travel to the site of the incident and take steps for arresting the culprits at the earliest. The chief minister also directed the police to intensify operations against the extremists in the state.  

While expressing grief over the death of brave and competent police officer Bhaskar Kalita, the chief minister in his condolence message said that Kalita had shown a bright example of dedication towards one’s duty. His courage and sacrifice would inspire all security personnel to fight against terrorism with renewed vigour and force, he said.
