GUWAHATI: Very high price of Rs 12493 per kg was fetched by a variety of specialty white tea manufactured in an Assam tea garden on Tuesday in the sale conducted at Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC), the largest CTC tea auction centre in the country.
Jogipather brand White Tea manufactured by Pipratoly Tea Estate in Dibrugarh district of Assam broke the previous record in the all India tea auction chain by fetching highest price in the Sale No. 19 in Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC). It happens to be the highest price commanded so far by Assam White Tea varieties in the country.
The Secretary of Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers’ Association, Dinesh Bihani informed, “Jogipather White Tea has broken its own record at the GTAC Sale 19 today. Invoice W66 sold by Parcon India Pvt Limited today fetched a record price of Rs 12403 per kg. The lot of two kg was bought by Mundhra Tea Co.”
The white tea is manufactured from unopened tea buds and the cost of manufacture is very high. It is found to possess tremendous medicinal and health quality.
The previous highest price was fetched by Donyi Polo Pekoe White sold by Contemporary Brokers at Rs 12001 and bought by Vedanta Tea Company in Sale 36 in the GTAC last year.
Aditya Agarwal of Pipratoly Tea Company said, “The plucking has to be extremely fine for manufacturing white tea. Plucking rounds of three to four days have to be maintained. With a special variety of clone, we have been able to achieve a very aromatic and soothing cup quality. Extensive supervision is required to maintain quality of white tea.”
To manufacture White Tea unopened buds are finely plucked at an opportune moment, either at the start or at the end of the season and is the least processed of all teas. The liquor is clear and pale and the taste is fresh and light. There is a delicate sweetness with a lingering finish on the palate.
