Physical Education Centre Inaugurated at USTM

GUWAHATI: Coaching on several sports has been introduced in the University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) with the formal inauguration of the office of Physical Education and University Sports Forum on Monday in the presence of reputed coaches, student players, the Chancellor and the Vice Chancellor as well as other university officials.

 

M. Hoque, Chancellor of USTM addressed the gathering and said that USTM will leave no stone unturned for uplift of sports among the students. The office of the Physical Education and University Sports Forum was inaugurated by the Chancellor.

The function was graced by two reputed coaches, Govinda Chandra Kalita the Kho-kho coach and Prafulla Gogoi, the Baseball coach. The guests were felicitated by Dr RK Sharma, Vice Chancellor, USTM. Gobinda Chandra Kalita is a physical instructor and yoga coach who is also the Jt. Secy., All Assam Kho-kho Association, General Secy, Guwahati District Kho-kho Association, coach at Guwahati Kho-Kho Coaching Centre at Sarusaji Stadium as well as National Referee of Kho-kho and Kabaddi. Prafulla Gogoi is an ace baseballer who has represented India several times. He is with the Assam Police.

 After inauguration of the office everyone proceeded to the Kho-kho match where the Chancellor met the officials and all team members and wished them the best. Girls from the stadium were invited for an exhibition match where USTM students also took part including the sports officer. This was followed by the inauguration of baseball by the USTM Chancellor by hitting the ball off the slugger.  The rules of the game were explained and an exhibition match was played in which USTM students too participated with great enthusiasm.

 

Earlier, the Aesthetic Zone was inaugurated in the morning which was attended by several students. Here basic stretching and yoga was taught to the students by the Sports Coordinator Jadav Thakuria. The students were also informed about the ongoing sports registration process at USTM. 

 

The event ended with handing over of tokens of appreciation by the Chancellor of USTM to each of the players from Kho-kho and Baseball teams for their valuable contribution in making the event successful. A registration system has been put in place for the students who can register for morning and evening sessions as well as select specific games as well.
