SHILLONG: Fourteen accused persons have been charge-sheeted in the case related to the 14-year-old girl who was raped by former MLA Julius Dorphang and several others.
East Khasi Hill SP Davis Marak said out of the 11 cases registered, six were charge-sheeted involving 14 persons. These accused are currently facing trial.
Earlier, as many as 19 persons were arrested and they include Dorphang, 66-year-old Kentley Tanglang, Madan Bahadur Thapa, Nirdesh Jain, Elbert Kharlukhi, W Khongsit, Sandeep Biswa, Usha Debbarman, Mamoni Parveen, Mary Kharbamon, Monalisa Shangpliang, Hussain Ali and an army man called Sagar. Some of these accused had obtained bail.
Police said out of the 11 cases, one case did not progress and it ended as final report while four are still under investigation and four are yet to be arrested.
According to police, the four who are still at large are an army man, a person from West Bengal whom the girl addressed as ‘professor’ and two Muslim men.
Earlier, the chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Meena Kharkongor, had lodged 19 FIRs against the accused involved in the crime for the cases in East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi.
The sensational case surfaced after the girl lodged a complaint with the Laban police in December 2016 that she was raped by many people at Marvelene’s Inn in Rilbong run by the family of former Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh.
