MDCs to meet CM on MUDA issue
SHILLONG: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) CEM PN Syiem said the MDCs will meet Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on May 15 to discuss on the issue of MUDA.Speaking to reporters after the Executive Committee (EC) meeting on Friday, the EC decided to meet all the MDCs and Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep on May 14.
Counselling for ex-militants held
TURA: A one-day counselling programme for the surrendered militants of different outfits was organised on Friday by 2nd MLP Bn Commandant, Dalton P Marak jointly with West Garo Hills SP, Dr M G R Kumar at the former’s battalion headquarters at Goeragre near Tura. During the programme, Pastor Kalseng K Marak along with the Peace Committee members and church leaders of North Garo Hills delivered the important messages about restoring & retaining permanent peace in the region. The programme included teachings on topics under the theme “How to overcome Life’s challenges”. Issues such as endangered environment were also highlighted by Batallion Commandant, Dalton P Marak. Later, Marak along with the district SP led the gathering in a tree plantation at the same venue.
Man felicitated for act of bravery
SHILLONG: The Dorbar Shnong of Madan Bynther, West Khasi Hills District, the Ryntathiang clan, Police Station of Mairang felicitated Shanlang Marbañiang for saving a minor girl, Ibapynkmen Ryntathiang from drowning. It was after Ibapynkmen who was with her cousin, Tiewshalor Ryntathiang (18 years) slipped into Kynshi river and due to the strong water current coupled with heavy rain, she was washed 100 meters away. On hearing Tiewshalor’s cries, Marbañiang jumped into the river. When he rescued the unconscious little girl, his attempts to resuscitate the girl proved helpful. On his act of bravery, the O/C, Mairang P.S. awarded him a Certificate of Bravery. It was decided to send his name to the central government for his act of bravery.
Trucks detained for wrong challan
SHILLONG: East Khasi Hills police recently detected eight trucks which were carrying challans of South Garo Hills though they were coming from Jaintia Hills. Police said that 11 trucks were detained at Mawryngkneng and police has registered a case of cheating against them.
Valuables of football players stolen
SHILLONG: The mobile phones, jackets and shoes of a number of football players were stolen from the premises of J.N Stadium during the AIFF Under-18 playoffs match on Thursday. The Meghalaya Football Association in an FIR filed with the police said that the theft took place on Thursday at approximately 3.30 pm during the AIFF under-18 playoffs match between SAG Football Academy and Minerva Punjab FC.As per the FIR, valuables mostly mobile worth Rs 1,09,700 belonging to players and officials of the SAG Football Academy was stolen from the dressing room.
Give priority to indigenous community for admission: HYC
SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council-Central Body met several principals of different colleges in Shillong to ensure that successful students from the indigenous community are given priority for admission in different courses. In a statement issued here, the principals of the Colleges assured to give priority to such students.

Mumbai based plastic factory sets up unit in state
Shillong: A launching ceremony cum dealers meet of the products of National Plastic Industries Ltd., Mumbai was held on Friday at MECOFED, Office Complex, Shillong.A L Mawlong, Managing Director, MECOFED inaugurated the showroom in presence of Chairman of MECOFED, Managing Director M.C.A.B Ltd., Shillong, officers and staff of the office of the Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Dealers and Representatives of National Plastic Industries Ltd., Mumbai. In her welcome address, she thanked the officers of National Industries Ltd. and everyone for taking initiative in launching the branded plastic product in the state. She also agreed to provide all sorts of support in taking the business to a greater height. Other who spoke on the occasions were Chairman MECOFED, Managing Director M.C.A.B. Indo-Bangla joint multispecialty medical camp
Shillong: In continuation to maintain friendly relations between India and Bangladesh, both the DG’s of BSF India and BGB Bangladesh decided to collaborate and organise multispecialty medical camp on May 11 in India and May 12 at the Bangladesh border area. On Friday, Composite Hospital BSF Shillong representing India in collaboration with 6 Bangladeshi doctors organised the multispecialty medical camp at Umsyiem, for the residents deprived of specialised treatment. The camp was inaugurated jointly by sector commander BGB Mr Nasir and Dr A C Bhardwajan, DIG/Medical Superintendent, BSF Composite Hospital Shillong. The medical camp was conducted for the first time under the Confident Building Measures which is aimed to provide medical attention to the poor and needy residents in border belt. The two-day camp is organised jointly by Sector Head Quarter BSF Jowai and Sector Sylhet BFB on May 11 and 12 at Dawki border outpost on the India side and Tamabil on the Bangladesh side respectively.
Garo Hills NGOs demand closure of pharmacy
TURA: Organisations from Garo Hills including GSU, FKJGP, AYWO and ADE have written to West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner demanding the immediate closure of the GLR Pharmaceuticals in Hawakhana which they alleged is functioning illegally. “Bernard Marak suddenly becomes the partner of GLR Pharmaceuticals. We do not believe he is a partner but running a protection racket because he means to use his self deluded power as the ex Chairman of the ANVC-B because the Trading by Non-Tribals (TNT) of Vivek Agarwal, Uma Agarwal and Manoj Agarwal has recently been cancelled by the GHADC. He means to keep the business house running illegally in lieu of money,” the organisations claimed. The organisations added that as Manoj Agarwal’s TNT is also cancelled. The organisations also pointed out that Vivek Agarwal also does not have the right to open his clinic, the Excel Care Clinic near Prime Alternatives at Tura Bazar as his TNT has also been cancelled.“The owner of the building Jurinitha K Marak, a resident of Araimile, Tura also issued a letter to Vivek because he refused to take calls from her. She cites various reasons for her actions,” they said.
