MeECL workers protest over pending demands

SHILLONG/TURA: Muster roll workers of MeECL protested on Wednesday to press for their demands.
In the city, the contract workers under the banner MeECL Progressive Workers’ Union (MPWU) demonstrated at the MeECL headquarters. They were supported by the Thma U Rangli Juki, or TUR, a local NGO.
The workers have been demanding equal pay for equal work, regularisation, release of revised wage and arrears and maternity leave, among other things.
The workers in Tura organised a sit-in demonstration at the MePDCL office. They protested with placards and posters and shouted slogans.
Many workers have been with the corporation for the last many decades without any kind of enhancement being provided.
) Earlier too there were agitations and several memoranda were submitted but with no result.
In Shillong, TUR’s Angela Rangad said the workers were demanding casual leave because at present they are entitled to only eared leave and that too after working for five years. The workers also want six-month maternity leave instead of two.
Demonstrations were also held in other places like Jowai and Khliehriat.
