SHILLONG: Over 200 people visit the world’s longest sandstone cave, Krem Puri on the weekends, while not less than 50 tourists visit the cave on weekdays. However, the cave is not under the umbrella of Tourism Department.
Krem Puri is located at Laitsohum falling under Nonglwai Sirdarship and 2 kms from Mawsynram, East Khasi Hills.
Bony Marbaniang, secretary of Laitsohum village said that Krem Puri which is over 24 kms long was found in 1880 when a villager Nodro Dohtdong drank water from the cave when he felt thirsty.
In 2005, the Dorbar Shnong of Laitsohum prohibited cutting of trees in the forest and changed it to a sacred forest.
Marbaniang informed that there are volunteers, who help the tourists by leading them to the cave.
However, till date, he has not informed the tourism department about the cave.
