SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) president, Donkupar Roy stressed on the complete unity of regional parties in the state which, according to him, will revamp politics in Meghalaya.
He was speaking to reporters after the MLA of Mawphlang SK Sunn had become an associated member of the UDP on Monday.
Expressing happiness at Sunn’s association with the party, Roy said the move made by Sunn would strengthen the hold of regional parties in the state as he rued over the waning influence of the regional parties in the state with every passing year.
“There are many reasons why the influence of regional parties declines. It will pose a threat to the future of the state if the regional parties do not unite,” he said.
He added, “The members of UDP yearn for the unity of all regional parties and like-minded leaders. If there is unity of all parties, we hope to rule the state again.”
According to Roy, discussions and talks will have to be considered while mulling the idea of unity of all regional parties.
Meanwhile, Sunn who won the Assembly 2018 election as an Independent candidate, said he chose to be associated with the UDP to bring all round development in the state.
Expressing hope that the UDP will bring together like-minded members, he said that such a move would ensure overall development in the state.
Sunn had initiated motions, raised questions in the last Assembly session. He said being in the ruling side, would not restrict him from following up on the issues he had raised in the Assembly earlier.
