Mawkyrwat: The KSU South West Khasi Hills unit in collaboration with the Environment Protection Cell, KSU central body will observe the World Environment Day as Anti-Uranium Day.
The union informed that a rally will be organised on June 5 from the junction near the BDO office, Mawlangwir to Mawkyrwat market at 11 am.
Forwardman Nong-rem, president of KSU South West Khasi Hills & secretary Environment and Cultural Protection Cell, KSU central body said the reason behind holding a public rally on June 5 is to demand from the government to end the chapter of uranium mining in the state.
The union added that the move is also to condemn the government for its failure to bring in an independent team to study the death of fishes at Ranikor and the changing colour of the Kynshi river. “If the government through the Ministry of Environment and Forests does not withdraw the environmental clearance issued for open cast mining of uranium at Mawthabah-Domiasiat and Nongjri (Porkut) in SWKH, it means that the campaign for protecting the environment is only to mislead the people,” he said.
