SHILLONG: The State Planning Board will roll out a new programme of Pla and Sla on the occasion of World Environment Day which will include banning the use of plastic bags.
Chairman of the State Planning Board, Lambor Malngiang said that with the roll out of the scheme, the government would also completely ban the use of plastic. He said that the Board will even set up a unit and where all old clothes like Jainsem and others will be collected to make Pla, adding “This would also generate employment for the people.”
He also said that sla (leaves) are in abundance in the state which can be put to use. “If states like Sikkim can completely ban plastic bags then there is no reason why Meghalaya cannot do the same,” he added.
Malngiang also said use of plastic will be compounded with heavy fines and the details would be worked out soon.
