Sporadic arson cases in city

SHILLONG: The violence that started in the city on Thursday evening continued even on Saturday with fresh incidents being reported from several volatile localities here.
Miscreants tried to burn down a house near Mawbah cemetery on Saturday night. Police personnel were deployed to assess the damages.
Meanwhile, a two-wheeler showroom at Mawblei was torched around 10.30pm. Nine bikes were completely burnt.
Residents said miscreants first broke the glass of the showroom and later threw a petrol bomb inside.
The arson cases in the last two days compelled the district administration to ban sale of petrol in jerrycans and bottles.
Around 8.20pm on Friday, miscreants lobbed a petrol bomb at a vehicle with Meghalaya registration near MUDA Residential Quarters in Malki.
Around 10.30 pm, another petrol bomb was thrown inside the compound of Tirtha Basnet, Pynthorbah Block-III. However, the bomb did not explode.
On the same day, around 9.25pm, miscreants burnt tyres in the middle of 4th Mile road, Upper Shillong.
Earlier, a complainant identified as Vicky Singh lodged a complaint stating that on June 1 around 7pm, miscreants lobbed a petrol bomb at his shop located at Punjabi Lane in Mawlong-hat.The shop was damaged along with a scooter and a refrigerator and the loss was estimated at Rs 3,70,000.
On Friday evening, miscreants assaulted Lika Kharmuti (18) at Punjabi Lane. The victim sustained injuries and was admitted in Civil Hospital but was later referred to NEIGRIHMS.
In a statement, the DC said the order was issued in view of the serious breakdown of law and order in the city primarily at Motphran, Mawkhar and adjoining areas which may lead to the loss of life and property. It will remain in force until further orders.
A report from Nongpoh said a truck with Punjab registration was torched at Umran in Ri Bhoi. The Tripura-bound truck, which was coming from Nepal with CGI sheets, was parked near a dhaba and the driver was sleeping in the cabin when miscreants set the vehicle ablaze after pouring petrol. The driver was alerted by the sound of tyre burst and escaped. He alerted the dhaba owner who informed police.
