SHILLONG: The Akali Dal leaders of the Sikh community from Delhi and local Punjabi leaders assessed the ground situation at Punjabi Lane on Sunday after they got ‘misleading reports’ from the mainstream media that Sikhs were displaced only to realise that the situation is normal.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma admitted that the news about the incident being projected by the national media and the social media is a cause for concern. He appealed to the public to be cautions while handling the situation.
Manjit Singh G K, president of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee,
Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Shiromani Akali Dal MLA from Delhi, and Satbir Singh, general secretary of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee and president of Youth Akali, first met the residents of Punjabi Lane and later they met the chief minister.
According to the Sikh leaders, there were disturbing reports reaching Delhi which compelled them to rush to Shillong.
They said after reaching Shillong, they understood the ground reality and were happy that the situation is normal and not as projected.
“We want to live in peace along with the peace-loving people of the city,” they said.
The chief minister said the Sikh leaders from Delhi and the headmen want peace to prevail.
“We will find an amicable solution to the current problem. We are concerned over fake and false news related to the incident spreading outside the state,” Conrad said.
