Curfew relaxed for nine hours in vulnerable Shillong areas

 SHILLONG: Curfew in the volatile areas of Shillong has been further relaxed for 9 hours on June 8 from 7.00 A.M. to 4.00 P.M. and is promulgated again with effect from 4.00 P.M. and until further orders, the District Magistrate, East Khasi Hill District informed. On the other hand, the night curfew in Shillong Agglomeration will be from 8:00 P.M. to 5: 00 A.M. on June 8.

The volatile areas in which curfew has been relaxed included areas under Lumdiengjri Police Station, that is, Jaiaw, Mawkhar, Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission, Mawprem, Lumdiengjri, Lamavilla, Qualapatty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hill, Cantonment, Mawlong Hat including Cantonment Beat House Areas (excluding localities beyond Umshyrpi bridge).

Iewduh (Bara Bazaar), Motphran, Mawkhar and other areas which were previously under curfew was abuzz with activity as people rushed their way to the market and came out from their homes on Thursday as curfew was relaxed from 7 AM to 2 P.M.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Superintendent of Police (SP) (City), S.A. Rynjah informed that the situation was getting back to normal and the Dorbar Shnong would work together with the police department to ensure peace and security.

It may be mentioned that the police personnel faced mob fury during the days of turmoil that started from Thursday (May 31) till Monday and the tension eased as days have passed.

He said over 100 police personnel were injured as police exercised maximum restraint and some were seriously injured.
