BSF seizes cattle, contraband worth Rs 47 lakh
SHILLONG: On June 12 Border Security Force seized around 65 cattle which were being smuggled to Bangladesh along the areas of Muktapur, Nayabazar, OP Shella, East Khasi Hills and Sanghat in West Jaintia Hills. The smugglers have been trying to smuggle cattle through the unfenced areas and have also tried to breach the Indo-Bangla Border Fence on several occassions. “Still there are many unplugged gaps for which more joint efforts are required to be taken with other sister agencies to curb these menace at the hinterland only,” said UK Nayal, DIG/PRO BSF Frontier Meghalaya. The BSF has taken a series of measures to curb cattle smuggling along the border. BF has also seized over 200 cattle, and contraband items worth Rs. 47 Lacs, while being smuggled out from India to Bangladesh during the last seven days from Tuka, Nayabazar, Lyngkhat, Umsiyam, Pyrdwah, OP Shella, Muktapur, and Baburambill in West Garo Hills. All the seized items have been handed over to the concerned departments for further legal action.    

MUPSTA to hold general meeting on Saturday
SHILLONG: The MUPSTA Sohra sub-divisional unit will hold its General Meeting on June 16 at Sohra Twa Pres. L.P. School, Sohra Pdengshnong at 11:00am. The association has emphasized on the importance of the meeting and has requested all teachers falling under the MUPSTA banner (Improved & Adhoc), under the jurisdiction of Sohra unit to attend the meeting without fail.

Woman hit by truck succumbs to injuries
NONGSTOIN: One person identified as Dwial Lyngkhoi (50) of Tynrongriangkhon village in West Khasi Hills lost her life after she was hit by a truck near the BDO office at Riangdo on Wednesday around 10:30am. Sources said that the truck (ML 06 0182) driven by Shaibor Mawlieh (22) of Nongryngkew hit the 50 year old woman as she was walking near the BDO office. The woman was transported to Riangdo CHC by a 108 Ambulance but succumbed to her injuries en route. The body was later handed over to the bereaved family and a case has been registered regarding the whole incident.

Road mishap claims two in East Jaintia Hills
JOWAI: One truck (AS O1 AC 9575) crashed into a 300 foot gorge while proceeding towards Guwahati from Silchar. Two bodies suspected to be the driver and a helper were recovered from the crash site. According to police, the incident took placed on Wednesday afternoon and both the bodies are yet to be identified.

Adventure camp concludes
SHILLONG: The Eastern Command Adventure Camp 2018 organised by 101 Area Headquarter was conducted by the 58 Gorkha Training Centre at Happy Valley from June 4 to 8. The objective of the camp was to inculcate a spirit of adventure, competitiveness, team spirit, camaraderie and espirit-de-corps amongst the children. The camp organised various activities which included rock climbing, air pistol firing, archery, jungle trail walks, map reading and navigation, obstacle crossing, jungle survival skills and team games which included basketball, handball, volleyball and many others. Around 57 children attended the camp. Apart from the outdoor activities, the camp also included tree plantation on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5. Workshops and field trips were also organised for the children.

PDF to award students
SHILLONG: The People’s Democratic Front (PDF) Mylliem Zonal Committee lauded all the students who successfully passed their SSLC, ICSE, CBSE and HSSLC examinations. The PDF Mylliem has also informed that awards will be given to students from Mylliem constituency who have achieved 1st division. Students can submit their attested marksheets along with their contact information at the office of the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) at Lummawbah Block-4, from 8:30am to 12:00pm on or before June 30.

Craft making competition
SHILLONG: Sobujer Dol Laban – a socio-cultural organization – will organise an Inter Shillong Craft Making along with a think, write & recite competition at Laban Bengalee Boys’ Higher Secondary School on June 16 from 10:00 am to 2:00pm. Entry counters will be open at 9:00 am.

Heat wave advisory
SHILLONG: The Joint Secretary, Revenue & Disaster Management, has informed that the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the heat wave this year of having an early onset and extending for a prolonged period and also indicated increasing trends in the frequency and duration of heat wave over the country. In this regard the department issues an advisory on the heat wave to mitigate the ill effects of the ensuing heat wave. The adverse impacts of heat wave are preventable by educating the public on the preventive actions and by following the important DO’s and DON’Ts like drinking sufficient water and as often as possible, even if not thirsty and wearing lightweight, light coloured, loose and porous cotton clothes. Another direction is to keep the homes cool, use curtains, shutters or sunshade and open windows at night.
