SHILLONG: The accused in the murder of a three-week-old baby at Mission Compound, Mawkhar, has been hospitalised after his arrest.
East Khasi Hills SP Davis Marak said on Wednesday that after the arrest of the accused on Tuesday evening, he was hospitalised.
The accused has turned out to be the ex-husband of the woman.
The SP said it was around 2.30 am that the accused entered the woman’ room and snatched the baby.
“Initially, we thought it was a kidnapping case, but later, it was found that the body was dumped in a bucket of water on the terrace. We arrested him though he is denying his role”, the SP said.
The FIR had named the accused as the suspect.
The police official said the accused is apparently a drug addict and personal jealousy may be the reason for the murder.
The Meghalaya police website quoting the FIR said Banrilang Bleine of Mission Compound, lodged a complaint that on Tuesday at around 2.15 am, Clarence Rajee (27) of Pohkseh, broke into his house, entered the room of Narisha M Bleine, punched her, threatened her family with dire consequences, took the baby from her and fled away.
“On hearing her cries, the complainant and his mother rushed to her room, but the accused had escaped through the terrace of the building”, the FIR said.
On conducting a search, they found the baby in a bucket of water and they rushed to Dr. Gordon Roberts Hospital, Jaiaw, where the attending medical officer declared the baby brought dead, the FIR added.
