SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who is the chairman of the High Level Committee, said on Wednesday said the panel will study the pros and cons of relocation of residents of Sweepers’ Lane.
“We need to look into all the angles before arriving at any conclusion”, Tynsong told reporters.
“It is too early to reveal the outcome. We will study the pros and cons”, Tynsong said.
Asked about the protest of the people of the area on Wednesday, Tynsong said that there was no harm in peaceful demonstration, but the government will carry out the survey and nobody can prevent this.
He said after the mapping of the area, there will be a series of meetings of HLC which has had only two sittings till date.
According to Tynsong, the residents of the area should be aware that relocation is for decongesting the city compared to the past when Shillong was spacious.
“Be it any colony or any structure, if the government feels that there is a public interest, then a decision will have to be taken”, Tynsong said.
He asserted that a permanent solution will be arrived at which will be acceptable to all.
“Any stakeholder can send in their grievances at any time”, Tynsong said.
According to Tynsong, the issue of providing proper houses to the residents should be left to the wisdom of the government and there is no need for anyone to make an issue out of it.
“The question is relocation and not displacement. The brothers and sisters there should have proper toilets, washing rooms and we will provide better facilities as current accommodation is not healthy. They will live with us and die with us”, Tynsong said.
Referring to the frequent visit of Sikh delegations, Tynsong said,” those friends should not make any statements of provocation”.
Tynsong also said as per the 1954 standing agreement with Syiem of Hima Mylliem, the land at Sweepers’ Lane belongs to the Municipal Board.
