SHILLONG: Border Security Force, Meghalaya Frontier initiated a Swachh Bharat Abhiyan along with the Border Guards Bangladesh on Wednesday in a joint effort to keep the areas along the state’s international border clean.
The clean drive was also carried out at the BSF’s Umpling campus, sector headquarters at Dobasipara, Tura and Mawpat here on Wednesday.
BGB officers and troops along with BSF personnel and border residents participated in the clean drive at Borhills areas in East Khasi Hills district, an official statement said.
After the drive, an informal meeting was held between Inspector General BSF Meghalaya Frontier, L Mohanti, and M Zahid Hasan, Region Commander, BGB at Dawki.
Both the commanders met informally before the IGLT meeting scheduled in July. The inspector general, BSF conveyed his concern over issue of extraction of stones and sand from Piyang river.
Besides, other issues of border management were also discussed by both the commanders.
) Under its action plan, BSF carries out cleanliness drive besides different activities like systematic waste disposal, community awareness for cleanliness in different border villages through distribution of dust bins, construction of public toilets, workshops on bio-digester among others. As part of the drive, BSF Senior Secondary School Umpling also carried out a series of awareness programmes and participated in different activities such as painting, drawing, creative and essay writing.
“More such programmes will be conducted in coming days,” said U K Nayal, DIG/PRO, who was nominated as the nodal officer for the Swachh Bharat campaign for Border Security Force Meghalaya.
