Police issue advisory against use of modified exhaust pipes
SHILLONG: In view of modified exhaust pipes causing disturbance and annoyance to passersby in the city, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Davis NR Marak had issued an advisory to the public on April 12 in The Shillong Times and other newspapers informing that violaters would be booked under Section 102 of the Meghalaya Police Act along with a fine of Rs 5000. The Shillong Traffic Police conducted checking in and around the city on June 18 and recorded around 24 cases in which youngsters were caught using modified exhaust pipes. The Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) had also stated that checking will not be only for two wheelers but for all types of vehicles.
World Environment Day celebrations conclude in Jowai
JOWAI: The District Basin Development Unit (DBDU), West Jaintia Hills, held a grand finale marking the conclusion of the World Environment Day celebrations at Ialong Eco Park in Jowai on Thursday. Local MLA Wailadmiki Shylla graced the programme as the chief guest. DBDU Vice Chairperson Donny M. Wallang stated that “it is the duty of each citizen to ensure that the in pursuit for material prosperity enriching ourselves by obtaining our wealth, we should not compromise our environment.” A request to initiate a ‘Green Social Responsibility’ programme was also brought to the attention of the chief guest. West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner R Rapthap, encouraged students to plant trees, prevent pollution and spread awareness on what they have learned through the various programmes. Prizes were distributed to the winners of the different competitions conducted as part of the programme by the Forest Department and DBDU, Jowai. A special cash prize was awarded to W. Dhar of Ialong for planting the maximum number of trees.
EGH NGOs call off stir as DC assures transfer of doctor
TURA: Organisations from East Garo Hills including the GSU, ADE, FAF, AYWO and others which had begun a two day picketing of the offices of the DMHO in Williamnagar on Tuesday, called off their agitation after the deputy commissioner had made an assurance to look into their demands on Wednesday. The organisations had called a picketing of the offices under the DMHO demanding the transfer of a female doctor posted at Bansamgre PHC who they accused of negligence and non attendance. On Tuesday evening, leaders of the concerned organisations met the deputy commissioner in his chamber where they were allegedly assured that the matter would be looked into and the doctor in question transferred.
GSU demands Dalu sub-division
SHILLONG: The Dalu regional unit of the Garo Students’ Union submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma regarding the need for the creation of a civil sub-division at Dalu. Dalu is one of the vast areas. There are ten G.S circles in Dalu Block. The other G.S circles from other Blocks are also willing to co-operate with Dalu Block”, the GSU said. According to the students’ body, the population is increasing rapidly. There are many educational institutions and offices like P.W.D, MEPDCL, PHE, irrigation, veterinary and others besides banks, police station, BSF camp and other offices. The chief minister told GSU that he would discuss with other ministers regarding the matter.
