WILLIAMNAGAR: The principals of Rongrenggre Govt. Higher Secondary School and Williamnagar Govt. College, Williamnagar have issued a clarification stating that that their respective institutions had denied admission to a visually impaired student based on the criteria for admission.
The leading english dailies in the state carried a news-report on June 20 stating that a visually impaired student Chonkame Sangma, who passed her SSLC examination this year from Educere Secondary School, was denied admission in the science stream in both Williamnagar Govt. College and Rongrenggre Govt. Higher Secondary School.
The matter regarding the denial, although without mentioning the reason, was made known during the felicitation ceremony in the office chamber of the East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner on June 19 after which the DC assured to get her admission in Loyola College.
As per the clarification given by both the institutions, the visually impaired student was denied admission in science as she had failed in Mathematics.
“A student has to pass in both the Science and Mathematics with a minimum of 45% marks in SSLC examination to get admitted in the science stream” the clarification said.
