SHILLONG: Following the resignation of Congress legislator MM Danggo, South Tura legislator Agatha Sangma is likely to resign as MLA next week to pave way for Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to contest the seat.
The Assembly Deputy Speaker Timothy Shira said on Friday that Agatha will have to resign at the earliest as there is limited time for the Election Commission to start the process of by-polls.
The chief minister will have to get elected to the Assembly within September 6 as the stipulated time of six month expires on that day after he took oath on March 6.
Sources said that the by-polls for both Ranikor and South Tura seats may be held simultaneously.
