GUWAHATI: Two persons were reported dead in Cachar district of Barak Valley on Monday even as the overall flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement with none of the rivers flowing above danger level.

With the two deaths, the total flood-related casualties in the first wave have risen to 23.

The flood bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority here said that five districts – Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj – continue to remain affected by the deluge with areas under eight revenue circles lying submerged.

Till date, 96,993 people in 192 villages remain affected by the floods, a drastic fall from the few lakhs that were affected a few days back.

Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal had visited Barak Valley and taken stock of the situation in the affected districts before announcing a Rs 100crore package on Sunday for the flood-hit areas there.

The crop area affected by floodwaters too has come down to 1364 hectares, the bulletin informed.

At present, 74 relief camps/relief distribution centres are operational in the five districts. Of them, 60 are in Hailakandi.
