TURA: A married woman from Jendagre village of Asanang under Rongram Block in West Garo Hills has filed an FIR against her husband alleging physical and mental abuse against her before eventually deserting her and her two-year-old son.
The FIR was filed at the Tura Womens’ Police Station by Namchina A Sangma against her husband, Paul Shanker, who she married in 2016.
According to the FIR which was filed with the help of local leaders and NGOs like the GHSMC, the accused is allegedly a habitual womanizer and has exploited many under aged girls who are unaware of his marital status.
Other than sexual exploitation, the husband is being accused of physical and mental abuse, torture to instigate suicide as well as decamping with household goods, which he took away while leaving them permanently. The wife also claims that pictures of him with other women in compromising positions were also sent to her by her husband on her mobile.
Local leaders who helped Sangma file the FIR said that the people were fed up with the ‘shameful activities of the accused ’ that they decided to file the FIR as a last resort and in the hope that many innocent young girls could be saved.
The GHSMC, which is taking up the case, has sought justice for the victim as well as action against the culprit.
“We cannot allow this to continue anymore. The atrocities committed by the accused against his wife as well as sexual exploitation of young girls have gone on for too long. We will do whatever is necessary to help the victim so that justice can be served,” GHSMC Chairman, Nikman Ch Marak said.
A copy of the FIR was also forwarded to the chairman of the Meghalaya State Women’s Commission (MSWC) in Shillong.
