TURA/ NONGPOH: A stationary night bus bound for Shillong from Tura was rammed from behind by a speeding truck early Monday morning at 12th Mile, Byrnihat killing the bus driver on the spot.
The RIA Travels bus (ML08 B 3811) left Tura on Sunday night and at around 3.30 am, while crossing the inter-state border in Byrnihat, the driver Krishna Hajong (50) stopped the bus and parked it on the side of the road to allow passengers to relieve themselves.
Hajong was standing in front of the bus, attending to the call of nature when a speeding dumper truck (NL01 K 8807) dashed against his vehicle from behind. The impact was so powerful that the bus was pushed forward hitting Hajong head on resulting in his death.
The driver and handyman of the truck fled from the scene immediately.
The night bus sustained damaged at its rear end and the helper of the bus and some passengers seated behind received minor injuries.
The NH-6 has been a major accident prone route since its inauguration with many lives being lost. Most of the accidents have taken place during the night or early morning hours when drivers of trucks and buses step on the accelerator unconcerned about other vehicles and commuters using the same road.
