GUWAHATI:  One person was killed and three others injured when a mob attacked them suspecting them to be child-lifters at Murabari area under Mohanpur sub-division of West Tripura district at around 11 A.M. on Thursday.

A senior police official in Agartala. The headquarter of West Tripura District, informed that four persons were travelling in a Maruti Ecco vehicle at Murabari area in Mohanpur sub-division when they were attacked by a mob of villagers suspecting them to be child-lifters.

Police said rumours were being circulated in the social media about gangs of child-lifters roaming around in the state in the wake of killing of a 10-year-old boy on Tuesday.

“One of the persons under attack died while two others sustained serious injury. One person received minor injury. The police have registered a case and investigation was on. The identity of the victims is yet to be ascertained,” the police official said.

The today’s mob attack occurred in an area that is close to Bilerpar area where the 10-year-old boy Purna Biswas was killed by unidentified assailants on Tuesday. Although police said that the postmortem report established that all his organs were intact, locals claimed that the boy’s kidneys were missing.

The State Director General of Police, Akhil Kumar Shukla, said that there is “no child-lifting or organised human organ trade racket in the State”.

Shukla cautioned that due to the wild spread of such rumours some untoward incidents might happen as in such situations, people might fall into the trap of rumour mongers. He warned that legal action would be taken against persons found indulging in such cases.
