Mawphlang gets science and commerce college

SHILLONG: Mawphlang MLA S.K. Sunn on Thursday made a joint inspection of the site for construction of commerce and science college at Mawphlang and the site for establishment of permanent campus for Khrawsing college at Mawphlang.
Members of the Hima of Mawphlang led by the Acting Chief Lamphrang Blah, including Myntris, headmen and elders of the Hima and B.W. Phira, Executive Engineer, PWD (buildings) joined Sunn in the inspection.
Following the administrative and financial approval for central financial assistance under Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR) scheme for the project at the cost of Rs 36.55 crore issued by Ministry of DoNER with a 90:10 funding pattern, tender was invited a few days ago with a deadline of July 24 to apply and for completion within two years.
The institution comprises college building, boys and girls hostel, Head of Department, Library and Archive, Principal’s quarters and others.
The land for construction of the college measuring around 20 acres has been given free of cost by the Hima of Mawphlang.
Speaking during the inspection, Sunn said the very purpose of
establishment of the college for commerce and science at Mawphlang is to solve the problem of increasing congestion in the state capital where students from the rural areas have to go to Shillong for studies.
The acting chief on the other hand thanked Sunn, who has taken initiative for implementation of the college.
After the site inspection at Mawphlang, Sunn inspected the site for establishment of a permanent campus for Khrawsing college at Mawngap.
) Khrawsing college which started in 2008, is presently functioning from a temporary campus at Mawngap.
NEHU under which the college is affiliated, has given the instruction that the college should be shifted to the permanent campus by 2018.
During the just concluded budget session of the Assembly, Sunn had stressed the need on the part of the government to provide financial support to the governing body of the college to enable shifting to the permanent campus behind PHE complex at Mawphlang.
Rev. J.R. Thabah, member of the governing body and B. Kharkongor, Principal of the institution informed that depending on financial support, they are making all efforts for shifting to the permanent campus at the earliest.
