GUWAHATI: Members of the Assam Chamber of Commerce  staged a protest here on Monday as part of a country-wide agitation by Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), opposing US retail giant Walmart’s proposed acquisition of e-commerce firm, Flipkart.

The traders maintain that Walmart’s buyout of Flipkart will create monopoly in the retail market and drive small store-owners out of business.

The members of the chamber are also demanding simplification of GST, pension for entrepreneurs and scrapping of individual income tax.

The Guwahati district committee of the Assam Chamber of Commerce also submitted memoranda to the Prime Minister and chief minister through the Kamrup metro deputy commissioner, a press statement said.

The chamber’s Guwahati district president, Jayanta Sarma informed that such demonstrations would be sustained in the near future till the demands were fulfilled.
