SHILLONG: The Congress is weighing the option to support UDP’s Pius Marwein for the by-poll in Ranikor.
Talking to media persons here on Wednesday, senior Congress leader Ampareen Lyngdoh said she had a “brief discussion” with CLP leader Mukul Sangma on the matter and “the party is going to disclose its plan of action at the right time”.
She hinted that the Congress might support the UDP candidate in the constituency as the party would go for a winning candidate.
“We are in the process of assessing the situation,” Lyngdoh said, adding that the party was reviewing all feelers from parties.
The UDP Ranikor Circle had said it would approach the Congress and other parties to garner support for Marwein and it would not “allow the high command to interfere”. The strong message prompted UDP president Donkupar Roy to call for discussions.
On supporting the UDP candidate, Lyngdoh said the resignation of MM Danggo came as a surprise. The MLA added that she did not know whether the party has a groomed individual in Ranikor who can contest the election.
But when asked about the South Tura by-poll, Lyngdoh said the Congress would “definitely put up a candidate as the party has groomed individuals in the constituency”.
