SHILLONG: The decision to hand over the two-lane Nongstoin-Rambrai-Kyrshai National Highway project under SARDP-NE to the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has been criticised by landowners and traditional heads.
A delegation of landowners and headmen on Wednesday met Deputy Chief Minister in charge of PWD, Prestone Tynsong and raised concern over the government decision.
“We are afraid that the government decision would further delay the project,” B.R Thabah told mediapersons after meeting the deputy chief minister.
Thabah stated that the land acquisition process was initiated by the office of the PWD Executive Engineer (Roads) and the sudden move to award the project to NHIDCL will lead to delay since implementation of the project will involve shifting of government utilities and forest clearance, among a host of other exercises.
“We are also afraid that the language barrier between the local people and NHIDCL officials might affect the project,” Thabah said, urging the state government to re-examine its decision of handing over the project to the NHIDCL.
He, however, made it clear that the said highway project had no connection with uranium mining in the district.
