To Sunday Shillong,

This is in reference to the article, ‘Fight the Japanese way’. Martial arts is fast gaining popularity in Shillong, especially among women who feel threatened by the current trend of sexual harassments. Self-defence mechanisms have become an important part of our lives not only in cities but also in villages and every high school and college-going student should have the basic fighting skills so that they do not feel helpless in the face of an adversity.

I too am trained in martial arts though not in the state. When I moved out of Shillong to a northern city for higher studies, I was little aware of and least interested about learning self-defence skills. But gradually I realised how important it is, especially when you are staying away from home. With months of training martial arts, I feel confident to go out alone even in an unknown city. Also, when with friends, I know I can protect them. I feel more women should come forward for such training because self-defence is always the best defence.

Thanking you

Aditi Roy

To Sunday Shillong,

This is in reference to the article ‘Bicycle Diaries’ published on July 1. It is indeed a positive trend that several professionals and youngsters are taking to riding for various reasons. In a small place like Shillong, cycling is the best mode of transport and the government should encourage the habit. It is high time that the government puts a check on vehicle registration considering the fact that the limited road infrastructure cannot support the growing number of cars. If riders are encouraged by building proper infrastructure that will go a long way in terms of preserving the environment and reducing road congestion. Those in the government who can ride should set examples for citizens by riding to office. As it was rightly pointed out in the story, the city needs more parking space for bicycle riders. It also needs dedicated lanes for bikers. In fact, tourists can also be encouraged to hire bicycles and roam around the city instead of hiring a taxi. This way, Shillong can create its unique identity and at the same time pave the path for change in the country as a whole..

Thanking you

HM Lyngkhoi
