Sohra MLA asks for better facilities for tourists

SHILLONG: Sohra MLA Gavin Mylliem has said there should be tourist facilitation centres, sufficient local taxis, trained local guides and lay-byes to cater to the growing number of tourists.
“Till now there is no proper tourist information centre. Local guides and local drivers should be trained,” he said.
According to him, the tourist inflow 10 years ago was 4 lakh and currently the figure is more than double, “which is very encouraging”.
He added that though tourism sector generates sufficient revenue, it should benefit locals.
Pointing to the tourism industry as a lucrative entrepreneurship venture, Mylliem said, “People should try unique ventures such as Sohra souvenir. Unfortunately, you will not find Sohra souvenirs. There is a shift now as there are many people who are setting up home-stays.”
Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Metbah Lyngdoh speaking on the tourism policy said, “We are working on it.’’
“We don’t want to make anything wrong. We are hopeful to come out with a good one.”
