SHILLONG: The Khasi Hills Democratic Alliance (KHDA), a new alliance in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has decided to nominate NPP MDC Hispreaching Son Shylla as the consensus candidate for the post of the Chief Executive Member in the KHADC.

The move to nominate Shylla came after PN Syiem had tendered his resignation from the post of CEM before facing the trial of strength during the emergent session to discuss on the no-confidence motion against the Executive Committee (EC) in the Council led by Syiem.

Speaking to reporters after the KHDA meeting on Tuesday, Shylla was firm to resolve the issue of Sweepers’ Lane (Them Iew Mawlong) by making it a priority item in the agenda of the next Executive Committee to be formed in the Council.

“The land at Them Iew Mawlong belongs to Nongkhlaw clan. However, the Syiem (of Hima Mylliem) kept the appointment of the Myntri pending. The appointment of the Myntri should have been done long time ago,” he said.

Known for being vocal against the expansion of MUDA Building bye-laws to scheduled areas, Shylla said, “The previous EC did not follow up the issue even after the State Government had stated that the MUDA building bye-laws should not be implemented in scheduled areas.”

He added, “We will try to see that the building regulation of the Council comes into force within two to three weeks time.”

Stating that the long pending issue of the Village Administration Bill (VAB) will be followed up, he said that the committee on VAB headed by former Deputy CEM, Teilinia Thangkhiew will remain even though the new EC will have to notify the committee again.

Other than the issue of Sweepers Lane, the administration of justice will feature in the list of priorities in the new EC even as he expressed his regret over the numerous case pending cases in the District Council courts.

“There is a need to expedite the clearing of the pending cases as well as to strengthen the subordinate court of the Council,” he said.

Speaking about new Council schemes expected to receive from the Centre, Scylla pointed to the speedy preparation of utilization certificate to be submitted to the Central government

It may be mentioned that Scylla held the post of CEM KHADC during 2004-2009. He was first elected as MDC in 1984.
