NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday pulled up states, including Meghalaya, which have not yet appointed the Lokayukta and gave three more months for the same.
The meeting of the selection committee to decide on Meghalaya Lokayukta was scheduled on June 4 but did not take place owing to the law and order disturbance in Shillong. The same reason was stated in the court on Tuesday.
Sources said the Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya, who is part of the selection panel, was also not available, adding to the delay.
The committee was to shortlist the names to be appointed as chairman and other members of the Lokayukta. The state government had decided to appoint the chairperson by June 30.
However, since the government has not started the process, it sought more time from the Supreme Court during the hearing. Meghalaya and other states have filed affidavits in this regard.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had asked the chief secretaries of 10 states why the Lokayukta was not in place and had set July 10 as deadline.
