SHILLONG: The new alliance in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council decided to nominate NPP MDC Hispreaching Son Shylla as the consensus candidate for the post of chief executive member after PN Syiem resigned on Tuesday.
Syiem quit the post before facing the trial of strength during the emergent session to discuss on the no-confidence motion against the Executive Committee led by him. The election to the vacant CEM post will be held on Thursday. The filing of nomination and scrutiny of papers will be held on Wednesday. Speaking to reporters after the meeting of the Khasi Hills Democratic Alliance on Tuesday, Shylla was firm to resolve the impasse over Sweepers’ Lane on a priority basis. ( “The land at Them Iew Mawlong belongs to the Nongkhlaw clan. However, the Syiem (of Hima Mylliem) kept the appointment of the Myntri pending.
The appointment should have been done long time ago,” he said.
The administration of justice will also be on the priority list as “there is a need to expedite the clearing of the pending cases as well as to strengthen the subordinate court of the council”.
The senior leader, who was vocal against the expansion of MUDA building bye-laws to scheduled areas, said, “The previous EC did not follow up the issue even after the state government stated that the MUDA building bye-laws should not be implemented in scheduled areas. We will try to see that the building regulation of the council comes into force within two to three weeks.”
On the Village Administration Bill (VAB), Shylla said the committee on VAB headed by former Deputy CEM Teilinia Thangkhiew will remain even though the new EC will have to notify the committee again.
Speaking about new council schemes expected to receive from the Centre, Shylla pointed to the speedy preparation of utilisation certificates to be submitted to the Centre.
Shylla held the post of CEM KHADC during 2004-2009. He was first elected as MDC in 1984.
